After spending a little time around Arthur´s Pass National Park and down on the West Coast near Greymouth and Paparoa National Park, I headed to the gorgeous and quaint seaside town of Kaikoura. This is truly one of the most stunning areas I have ever seen. I reunited with my friend Shan, who I met in the Sierra when he was traveling in California about 5 years ago. Shan is a local Māori, and is about the most welcoming, hospitable, generous, warm, and fun loving person you could ever imagine hanging out with. He gave me the locals tour of Kaikoura, and also cooked me some of the most amazing meals I´ve had on the trip so far. Kaikoura is known for its marine life and delicious seafood, and it didn´t disappoint. I´ve gotten some of my favorite shots of the trip so far in Kaikoura, with the moonrise over the ocean below being one of my favorite all time photos. It was a magical night followed by the best sunrise of the trip so far, where the sky lit up with deep reds and was reflected in the tidal pools just off the Kaikoura Peninsula. Next up will be a post about the West Coast of New Zealand, with it´s magical rain forests, towering glacial peaks, and fairytale like trees, so check back soon!
In addition to just taking some time for myself and reconnecting with nature and my higher self, a huge part of my time here in New Zealand is shooting timelapse and still photography. I want to share a few behind the scenes shots showing some of the gear and people that are making this magical journey so rewarding.
